31 The liveliness of a neighbourhood is largely determined by its mix of functions. In order to attract different people at different times of the day and week, urban areas need to combine dwellings with working spaces and amenities. This map shows the degree to which parts of Amsterdam have such a mix at street level. Monofunctional areas become dominant towards the edges of the city. Areas which combine two functions are found throughout the city, especially along the ring road.
