Town walk De Pijp A voyage of discovery on foot through Amsterdam's Quartier Latin Why is De Pijp called De Pijp? There are several explanations for the district's name. One is that the long narrow streets that are so typical of this area are reminiscent of the drawers in which pipes are kept, the Dutch word pijp meaning pipe. Another, more likely, explanation is that the word pijp originally stood for a long narrow stretch of water, and in that meaning referred to the Zaagmolensloot, now Albert Cuypstraat the sawmill ditch that was the key element of this area until 1891. In the earliest town plans the new area is referred to as the YY district - this may also partly explain the name.
