‘Delft’s rich history is still very much alive’ IDEA League The IDEA League is a strategic partnership between five of Europe’s top universities, all of whom are committed to the highest international standards in both research and education. These standards are achieved by using common quality management principles for their educational programmes. In addition the IDEA league members have created a range of alternative study and research opportunities. The IDEA League partners are: - Imperial College London (England) - Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) - ETH (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule) Zürich (Switzerland) - RWTH (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule) Aachen (Germany) - Paris Tech (France) Website www.idealeague.org An attractive historic university city Delft is an interesting and historic town located in the province of South Holland between the larger cities of The Hague and Rotterdam, the former being the seat of Dutch government and the latter, with its Europoort, the largest sea terminal in the world. Delft is nicknamed ‘de Prinsenstad’ (the Princes’ City), because William of Orange, the first in the Dutch royal line, held court in Delft in the 16th century. Other famous historical figures who once lived and worked in Delft are the painter Johannes Vermeer and the inventor of the microscope, Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek. If one looks at the ancient canals lined with merchant’s houses, the old churches and the splendid town hall one sees that Delft’s rich history is still very much alive. At the same time, though, it remains a very modern, safe and vibrant city. Ten percent of its 100,000 inhabitants are students and the university has attracted a large number of technology-oriented companies. Website www.delft.nl 10| Master Prospectus

Student Initiative I am Ewoud de Kok, a second year student at Sustainable Energy Technology, TU Delft. I did my Bachelor’s degree in Econometrics at the University of Amsterdam and started my Master’s last year in Delft. Sustainable Energy is becoming increasingly important, and I moved to Delft because I want to help our society in the upcoming Energy Transition. That’s also the reason why I applied for a position on The Energy Club board. The Energy Club tries to bring together everyone within the field of Sustainable Energy: Students, Industry, Researchers and Professors. The Energy Club is the student-led part of the Delft Energy Initiative, which is one of the four Delft Research Initiatives (DRIs). The Energy Club has basically two parts: 1. Networking: by bringing together Industry contacts, Researchers and Students in the field of (sustainable) Energy, via Internships, Master’s Thesis topics and possible subjects for PHD. 2. Platform: by organizing activities including • Energy Club Projects: We facilitate multidisciplinary projects which are initiated by companies, professors or by ourselves. • Lunch lectures: Every month a specific theme is addressed, for which we invite interesting speakers from University or industry. • Excursions: On-campus lab visits and off-campus visits to companies. • Events: We organize a social get-together every three months, and in February 2012 the first edition of the ‘All Energy Day’ will take place. • Organising the Delft Energy Standards, a database with verified Energy Facts to feed society with scientific data for the Energy Transition. Doing al this brings me closer to the real-life practice than what I learn during my Master’s courses. Besides developing my personal skills, it allows me to actively contribute to a better future, which was the reason that I came to Delft. Combining studying and an active student life is a challenge in itself. My personal strategy is to study hard during exam periods and focus exclusively on the Energy Club after my exams. In my opinion, the work I do for the Energy Club also contributes to my studies because I get to know the professors and it gives me access to opportunities in terms of Internships and Master’s Thesis projects.
