‘Or to dive into the cool water on a warm summer day’ Leisure In Delft you will find a great many of things that will help you to enjoy student life. The city has numerous cafés and pubs, two cinemas and a theatre. There is also an abundance of reasonably priced restaurants. The ‘Delft international cuisine’ ranges from Chinese, Indonesian and Mexican to Lebanese food. Many student societies have their own restaurants which serve decent and healthy meals for price in the range of just € 4.00. Of course you can also cook your own food. Every Thursday and Saturday there is a market in the central market square, where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruit, fish and flowers. What else is there to do or see? The city park ‘Delftse Hout’ is the place to go for a stroll, to play soccer, to have a barbecue or to dive into the cool water on a warm summer day. If you prefer the sea then Scheveningen beach is only half an hour away by bus or tram. Delft also has a number of interesting museums such as ‘Nusantara’, which is devoted to Indonesian ethnology and art and the ‘Prinsenhof’, former residence of the first Dutch monarch, William of Orange. Of course there is also the famous ‘Delft blue’ pottery, still produced today in the same way that it was manufactured hundreds of years ago. This ceramics factory ‘Porceleyne Fles’ is open to the public and offers guided tours for those who are interested and the opportunity to purchase products in the factory shop. After I did my Bachelor in Industrial Design Engineering I knew I wanted to continue studying and do my Master’s at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering as well. In all the projects I had done, I always enjoyed the analysis phase of the project at the beginning and the implementation phase at the end the most. With this focus on the beginning and the end of the design process, Strategic Product Design was the most interesting option for me. I could not have made a better decision! Together with other motivated Master’s students, all of them from different parts of the world, I work on strategic projects and learn how to do research in our field of study. All the relevant topics are addressed: branding, design methodologies, generative sessions, customer research in new product development and design strategies. And the courses vary from theoretical to practical, a perfect combination for designers. Eva Duvekot [The Netherlands] Master’s in Strategic Product Design 14| Master Prospectus
I could have stayed at home but I wanted to have an experience abroad so I considered Master’s programmes in transportation all around Europe. I chose Delft for three reasons: the very high academic level, the ‘learning by project’ approach to pedagogy, and Delft’s geographic position, in the heart of Europe and close to home. In my opinion, the team project approach is really a key to gain access to the professional world. Engineers will all have to work in large teams, not alone in their room, so they may as well learn that at the university. I especially enjoyed the fact that in the TIL MSc programme we had lectures from three or four different faculties. This broadened our view of the field and we learnt a lot from the different approaches and methods across the entire university. Life as a student in Delft has been very enjoyable; the Dutch are very open and welcome foreign students easily, if you are ready to take some steps towards them too. I have now embraced the Dutch way of life. I live with Dutch people, eat Dutch food, and even speak some Dutch. Charles Pinard [France] Master’s in Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics Student societies Each MSc programme at TU Delft has its own student society, each of which protects the interests of its particular students. The various student societies also have representatives who sit on the faculties’ departmental committees and participate in discussions on teaching issues. It is their task to critically appraise teaching, detect problems and propose solutions. The student societies also organise many study related events, such as SET and Inholland students work together to create sails of the windmill car. conferences and excursions in the Netherlands and abroad. Naturally, they also organise parties and other leisure time activities as well. Once or twice a year, the student societies organize ‘Career days’ where various companies are invited to present themselves and students have the opportunity to talk with industrialists about career openings and opportunities.
